What a Steuerberater does

In Germany, “Steuerberater” is a protected professional title. Steuerberater are admitted by a regional chamber (Steuerberaterkammer) and are allowed to provide professional tax advice and to represent you towards the tax office.

Depending on your business, a Steuerberater may handle ongoing bookkeeping, payroll, VAT filings, annual financial statements and business tax returns — and act as your contact for tax questions during the year.

What “English-speaking” should mean for you

The official language towards German authorities is German, so filings and letters from the tax office will usually be in German. What matters is that your adviser can explain them clearly in your language.

Useful questions to ask: Will my day-to-day contact person speak English fluently? Are engagement letters, invoices and written summaries available in English? Does the team have experience with clients like me — for example international founders, foreign shareholders or cross-border sales?

Consider fit, not just language

Language is only one factor. A practice should also work with your legal form (for example UG or GmbH), suit your size, offer the services you need, and — if relevant — have experience with e-commerce, holding structures or international business.

Decide whether you need someone nearby for in-person meetings or whether remote cooperation anywhere in Germany works for you.
